A LITTLE PRACTICE GOES A LONG WAY

6th Grade Decimals

Connect decimal digits with place value and calculate using the correct unit size.

Understanding decimals in 6th Grade

Connect decimal digits with place value and calculate using the correct unit size.

A worked example

0.4 is four tenths, while 0.04 is four hundredths. Four tenths is ten times four hundredths.

Decimals: Add & Subtract

Align decimal points so that digits of the same place value are combined.

Example: 4.7 + 2.35 = 4.70 + 2.35 = 7.05.

Decimals: Multiply

Estimate the result first, then use place value to locate the decimal point in the product.

Example: 1.2 × 0.3 = 0.36 because 12 tenths times 3 tenths equals 36 hundredths.

Decimals: Divide

Scale the dividend and divisor by the same power of ten to make the divisor a whole number.

Example: 4.8 ÷ 0.6 = 48 ÷ 6 = 8.

Practice together

Ask the learner to explain each step, then change one number and try a similar example. Use a drawing, number line, or place-value model when it helps make the reasoning visible. Check the answer using an estimate or the inverse operation.
