Understanding multiplication in 4th Grade

Connect equal groups, known number facts, and place-value strategies.

A worked example

Six groups of four contain 24 objects, so 6 × 4 = 24.

Mental Multiplication

Use known facts and the distributive property to calculate mentally.

Example: 6 × 24 = (6 × 20) + (6 × 4) = 120 + 24 = 144.

Multiply in Columns

Align digits by place value, multiply one place at a time, and combine the partial products.

Example: 23 × 14 = (23 × 4) + (23 × 10) = 92 + 230 = 322.

Practice together

Ask the learner to explain each step, then change one number and try a similar example. Use a drawing, number line, or place-value model when it helps make the reasoning visible. Check the answer using an estimate or the inverse operation.
