A LITTLE PRACTICE GOES A LONG WAY

5th Grade Fraction Operations

Use equivalent fractions and visual models to explain operations with fractions.

Understanding fraction operations in 5th Grade

Use equivalent fractions and visual models to explain operations with fractions.

A worked example

1/4 + 1/2 = 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4. The denominators must describe equal-sized parts.

Add & Subtract Fractions

Find a common denominator before combining or subtracting the numerators. Simplify the result.

Example: 5/6 − 1/3 = 5/6 − 2/6 = 3/6 = 1/2.

Multiply & Divide Fractions

Model a fractional part of a quantity; connect division by a fraction with how many groups fit.

Example: 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2. Also, 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/2 because one and a half halves fit in three fourths.

Practice together

Ask the learner to explain each step, then change one number and try a similar example. Use a drawing, number line, or place-value model when it helps make the reasoning visible. Check the answer using an estimate or the inverse operation.
